WORLDSUCKS

GOD CALLED IN SICK, SOLID RIGHT HOOK, & OFF THE RAILS

Monday, May 20
Show: 7pm

Friends. Bandmates. Lifers. WORLDSUCKSis the culmination of 20-plus years of friendship and musical kinship. Guitarist/vocalist Mark Scully and drummer/vocalist Nick D’Amore started out in the NJ Hardcore scene of the mid- to late 90s. They joined forces in 1998 when Nick joined NME, a ragtag quartet of musical misfits within the scene.

A few short-lived bands later, and the two went their separate musical ways whilst remaining friends. Mark would go on to form and lead the metal band Sedna, who garnered a devoted local following during their 5-year history. After a couple records and a dizzying number of gigs, Mark was ready for something different—something more direct, more unrelenting. Songs trimmed of all fat and fluff til all that was left was an aural pummeling.

Nick, by this time, had begun to feel the itch to play heavy/fast music again after 10 years of power-pop and indie rock. Mark and Nick reconvened in Jersey City in 2012 to hang out and write. The two took their time writing and rewriting songs and discussing what the band’s goals would be musically, lyrically, philosophically. Pretty immediately, we knew at least one thing: that we wouldn’t fit in with a lot of what was happening in current heavy music.

The songs suddenly began to come together. These would make up much of their debut record, Warning You With Peace and Love. Recorded with friend and New Brunswick promoter, Miguel Romero, the album was recorded in his basement, which helped capture the band’s raw live energy. The album is a visceral document of the first phase of WORLDSUCKS’ existence.

In the 3 years since their debut, WORLDSUCKS has only gotten more ferocious. A Reckoning is the result of a sustained creative burst wherein the band wrote its fastest and most furious songs to date, mirroring Mark & Nick’s increasing frustration with U.S. society and the world around them—with an ever-so-slight glint of hope.

WORLDSUCKS have been relentlessly playing shows on a local and national level over the last three years in support of the debut album “Warning You With Peace and Love.” playing over 100 shows and having booked and self-funded two U.S. tours to date. The songs are fast, tight, and relentless, ranging from such topics as Palestinian freedom, combating the far right, and debunking myths of American history. WORLDSUCKS are tirelessly dedicated and have been bandmates and friends for 25 years. WORLDSUCKS live performances have been compared to 1990s-era Sepultura/Napalm Death with Slayer-like energy.
